What is a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP)?

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) allows investors to withdraw a fixed amount from a mutual fund at regular intervals. It is commonly used by retirees to generate monthly income from a lump sum corpus while keeping the remaining amount invested and growing. The corpus earns returns on the non-withdrawn portion.

How to Use This SWP Calculator

Enter your starting corpus (total mutual fund investment), the monthly amount you plan to withdraw, the expected annual return from the fund, and the duration in years. The calculator shows whether your corpus survives the full period and how much remains.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Use a conservative assumption that matches the fund type. Many planners use 7–9% for hybrid or balanced funds and 10–12% for equity funds, erring on the lower side to reduce the risk of projecting an unsustainably high withdrawal rate.
  • Lower withdrawal rates make a corpus more durable. As a starting point, keeping annual withdrawals below 4–5% of the starting corpus (the "safe withdrawal rate") works in many scenarios. Test multiple conservative return scenarios since actual returns vary.
  • SWP from equity mutual funds can be more tax-efficient. Only the gains component of each withdrawal is taxable (as LTCG at 12.5% if held over 12 months), while the principal portion is tax-free. FD interest is fully taxable at your income slab rate.
