What is Brokerage in Stock Trading?
Brokerage is the fee charged by your stockbroker for executing buy and sell orders on NSE or BSE. In India, broker pricing now varies materially even among discount brokers: some brokers still keep equity delivery free, while others charge up to ₹20 per executed order on delivery as well. Brokerage is only one part of trading cost — STT, exchange transaction charges, SEBI fees, DP charges, GST, and stamp duty can collectively exceed the brokerage itself on small trades.
This calculator itemises every rupee that leaves your account on a round trip, so you can see how much of a small trade is eaten by fixed costs before the price has moved at all.
How to Use This Brokerage Calculator
Select your broker, exchange, and segment (delivery, intraday, futures, or options), then enter your buy price, sell price, and quantity. For options, use buy premium and sell premium; if a bought option is exercised, enter the intrinsic value separately. Click Calculate to see an itemised breakdown of every charge and your net profit or loss.
Charges Breakdown Formula
Zerodha Charges Calculator — Example
Trade: Zerodha | Equity Intraday | Buy 100 shares at ₹500, Sell at ₹510
Gross P&L = (₹510 − ₹500) × 100 = ₹1,000
Brokerage = MIN(₹20, 0.03% of buy turnover) + MIN(₹20, 0.03% of sell turnover) = ₹30.30
STT = ₹51,000 × 0.025% = ₹12.75 (sell side only)
Exchange Charges = ₹1,01,000 × 0.00297% = ₹3.00
SEBI Fees = ₹1,01,000 × 0.0001% = ₹0.10
GST = (₹30.30 + ₹3.00 + ₹0.10) × 18% = ₹6.01
Stamp Duty = ₹50,000 × 0.003% = ₹1.50
Total Charges = ₹53.66 | Net P&L = ₹1,000 − ₹53.66 = ₹946.34

Frequently Asked Questions
-
For intraday equity trades below ₹67,000 turnover per order, Zerodha, Upstox, and Angel One are equally priced at ₹20 flat. Above that turnover the 0.03% cap means the effective charge drops below ₹20. Traditional brokers like ICICI Direct (0.275% per side) become significantly more expensive at all trade sizes for active traders.
-
No. STT on intraday equity trades is charged at 0.025% on the sell side and is non-refundable. It is a statutory tax collected by the Government of India, not a broker fee, so it cannot be waived regardless of whether you profit or lose on the trade.
-
Most traders forget that STT alone on an equity delivery trade is 0.1% on both buy and sell — meaning 0.2% round-trip. On a ₹1 lakh trade that is ₹200 in STT before any other charges. Adding exchange charges, GST, and stamp duty, the total cost of a delivery trade can easily be 0.25–0.35% round-trip even with zero brokerage brokers.
-
STT on options is 0.15% of premium turnover on the sell side from April 1, 2026. If an option is exercised, STT is also charged on intrinsic value. This calculator applies those rates automatically so you can see the real cost.
